ULI New York: What's Old is New: The Business Case for Adaptive Reuse

Join Built Buildings Lab Executive Director and 2024 ULI | KPF Kohn Fellow Lori Ferriss, the ULI Randall Lewis Center for Sustainability in Real Estate, and KPF for a presentation of the research report “What’s Old is New: The Business Case for Adaptive Reuse.”

Old is the new new as adaptive reuse gains momentum in commercial real estate. Existing buildings hold solutions to many of the challenges facing urban centers today, from housing shortages to high office vacancy to climate change. Reuse has the potential to reduce whole-life carbon, improve resilience, and support local cultural identity and small businesses-- it is also simply good for business.

A forthcoming report commissioned by ULI and made possible by a generous donation from Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) in the name of the late A. Eugene Kohn (ULI Life Trustee and KPF Co-Founder), explores the business case for adaptive reuse by illustrating three real-world examples that generated value to the developer while creating value in the community.

A reaction panel of real estate experts will follow the report presentation. Attendees will gain insights on key adaptive reuse approaches, financing strategies, applications, and processes, in addition to their carbon savings payback. Other areas to be explored include de-risking the adaptive reuse process; the relationship between urban revitalization and adaptive reuse; and future regulations that may influence developers, architects and public sector officials in decision making. This is your opportunity to hear key industry information first, and to participate in an immediate, real-time reaction event.
